A dryer with no heat or one that needs two cycles for a single load is not just annoying; a lint-clogged vent is also a fire risk; the U.S. Fire Administration names failure to clean as the leading factor in home dryer fires. We repair gas and electric dryers across Metro Atlanta, and every dryer call includes a vent airflow check because we would rather fix the cause than the symptom.

Most dryer failures are inexpensive parts: thermal fuses, heating elements, thermostats, belts, drum rollers and idler pulleys, and on gas dryers the igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils. They are widely available for Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, LG, GE, Kenmore and Electrolux, so the repair can often be finished on the first visit when the part is in stock.

You get a flat written price before we start, the $80 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair, and the work is backed by our 60-day parts-and-labor warranty.

Common problems

Dryer problems we fix in Atlanta

Tell us the symptom when you book; it helps the technician plan for the likely part. These are the problems behind most calls for this appliance.

  • Dryer runs but no heat

On an electric dryer, a blown thermal fuse, an open heating element or a failed high-limit thermostat; we also confirm both legs of 240V power are present. On a gas dryer, an igniter that never glows, a flame sensor or the gas valve coils, once we have confirmed the gas shutoff behind the dryer is open.

  • Gas dryer heats, then goes cold mid-cycle

The gas valve coils open the valve each time the burner relights; when they weaken, the burner lights at first and quits as the dryer warms up. A thermostat or a restricted vent can cause the same pattern, so we test rather than guess.

  • Takes too long to dry

Almost always airflow: a lint-packed vent duct, a crushed flex hose, a stuck exterior flap or a clogged blower wheel. Long vent runs through an attic or up to the roof make it worse.

  • Won't start

A door switch, a blown thermal fuse, a failed start switch, a broken belt tripping the belt switch or a dead drive motor. We test each in sequence.

  • Drum won't tumble

A broken drive belt, a seized idler pulley or a motor that hums but will not turn. A belt can usually be replaced on the same visit when it is in stock.

  • Squealing, thumping or grinding

Worn drum rollers, a failed idler pulley bearing, worn drum glides or a belt that has frayed. The noise pattern tells us which.

  • Too hot or a burning smell

Restricted airflow, a failed cycling thermostat or lint that has collected around the heater. Stop using the dryer until it is checked.

  • Shuts off early or clothes still damp

Moisture sensor bars coated with dryer-sheet residue, a failed thermostat or a control fault. Cleaning the sensor is part of every visit.

  • Marks or snags on clothes

A worn drum seal, a damaged drum baffle or a rough spot on the drum. We inspect the drum edge and seals.

  • Error codes

Sensor, thermistor, motor and airflow codes on Samsung, LG, Whirlpool and GE dryers. We decode and confirm before replacing parts.

Prevention

Maintenance tips for your dryer

A few habits that help prevent breakdowns, in line with what the manufacturers recommend.

  • Clean the lint screen every load

And wash it with soap every few months. Dryer-sheet residue coats the mesh and cuts airflow even when it looks clean.

  • Have the vent duct cleaned yearly

Lint in the duct is a fire risk and the most common reason for long dry times. Longer runs and roof vents need it more often.

  • Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct

Plastic and thin foil flex hose crushes, traps lint and is a fire hazard. Metal duct with short runs and few bends dries faster and safer.

  • Check the outside flap

If the exterior vent flap does not open freely while the dryer runs, the duct is restricted or the flap is stuck.

  • Wipe the moisture sensor

The two metal bars inside the drum control auto-dry cycles. Rubbing alcohol on a cloth restores accurate sensing.

  • Do not overload

Overloading blocks airflow and strains the belt, rollers and motor. Clothes should tumble freely.

FAQ

Dryer repair questions, answered

Why is my dryer running but not heating?

The usual causes are a blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element or a high-limit thermostat. A restricted vent often causes the fuse to blow in the first place, so we check airflow too.

How much does dryer repair cost?

The diagnostic is $80, waived with the repair. Most dryer repairs start at $180 labor plus parts, and dryer parts are among the least expensive of any appliance.

Do you repair gas dryers?

Yes. We repair gas and electric dryers, including ventless condenser and heat-pump models. On a gas dryer the parts that fail are the igniter, the flame sensor, the gas valve coils and the thermal fuse, and we replace all of them. The gas piping and the shutoff valve behind the dryer are work for a licensed plumber or gas contractor. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside; Atlanta Gas Light's 24-hour emergency line is 877-427-4321.

Do you clean dryer vents?

We check airflow on every dryer repair and clear the lint we can reach at the machine. Cleaning the full duct run, especially a long attic or roof run, is a job for a dryer vent cleaning professional, and we will tell you when it is needed.

Is a noisy dryer dangerous?

Squealing rollers or a thumping belt are not dangerous by themselves, but they will fail and can take other parts with them. A burning smell, however, means stop and call.

Should I repair or replace my dryer?

Dryers are simple and their common parts are inexpensive, so unless the drum, cabinet or motor has failed on an old unit, repair is usually the better value. Read the full guide

How long does a dryer repair take?

Many dryer repairs take about an hour once the part is on hand. If a part has to be ordered, there is no trip charge for the return visit.

Do you service stacked units in a closet?

Yes. Mention it when you book so the technician allows time to unstack safely.
